Kayaks were developed over hundreds of years. The Inuit were the first to practice it. People of the artic created several designs, depending of what materials were part of their culture. According to some historians, the word "kayak" stands for " clothing to move in the water". Other cholars, however, believe that the term actually means " man-boat". Most kayaks were fabricated using wood for the frame and then tied together using sinew, or tendons, with a seal skin cover. Other kayaks were made from whalebone or driftwood. In modern times, in 1865, a Scottish attorney named Hohn MacGregor rowed the Thames on a vessel built in accordance with Inuit standards. MacGregor published his experiences and thus attracted a large number of enthusiasts. As a result, The Royal Canoe Club at London came into being, the first kayaking club in the world. The New York Canoe Club was established five years later. Kayaking first featured in the Olympics as a demonstration sport at the Paris Games in 1924. It became a full medal sport at Berlin in 1936 with both canoe and kayak events. Women first entered the sport, competing only in Kayaking, at the 1948 London Games.
